MSU Women fall in double overtime

COMMERCE, Texas – The Midwestern State Unviersity women overcame a 17-point second half deficit before falling to Texas A&M University-Commerce 91-86 in double overtime in Lone Star Conference divisional crossover action.

MSU (4-8) got a three-pointer from Stacey Staten with 5.1 seconds to play to pull within one, then fouled A&M-C's Kanani Marshall who buried a pair of free throws to take a 74-71 lead.

La Tia Banks drove down the floor and hit a running three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the Lions (7-5) at 74-all and sending the contest to overtime.

In the first overtime MSU built a three-point lead thanks to a pair of free throws by Katherine Maples, only to have Marshal pop a trey with 1:13 to go.

With six seconds to play in the first OT tied at 82-all, MSU had a Banks shot blocked by Katedria Mosley out of bounds.  MSU fumbled in inbounds pass and couldn't get a shot off to end the first overtime.

In the second overtime, A&M-C's Portia Mitchell hit a two quick bucket to grab a lead away from MSU and never trailed again.

Maples pulled MSU within two at 88-86 on a layup with 1:13 to go, but needed to foul to get the ball back,

A&M-C hit 3-of-4 free throws in the last 14 seconds to claim the win.

Maples led MSU with 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Brittni Burks came off the bench with a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards.  Sonya Courtney tallied 18 points with six boards, with Katie Robertson adding 14 points.

MSU got 31 points from Marshall, who hit 7-of-10 shots from the three-point arc.  Mosley posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, with Mitchell and Andrea Lewis each scoring a dozen.

MSU will return to play on Thursday when it meets Northeastern State in a 6 p.m. contest at Gerald Stockton Court in D.L. Ligon Coliseum. It's the first of a men's and women's doubleheader.
