WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Tarleton State University guard LaShon Sheffield buried a three with 5:26 to play to give the Texans a lead they wouldn't relinquish as TSU downed Midwestern State University 67-61 Tuesday night in Lone Star Conference South action at Stockton Court in Ligon Coliseum.
MSU (11-6, 0-2) had built a pair of five-point advantages in the second half before Tarleton (13-4, 2-0) went on a 10-2 run capped by Sheffield's three to grab the lead.
But the dagger in the heart of MSU came with 2:07 to play when Tarleton, leading by just two, saw Sheffield hit a baseline three with one second on the shot clock to regain a five-point lead.
TSU controlled the action the rest of the game.
Midwestern was paced by a career-game from senior
LaKeith Grant who chalked up 19 points, 14 in the second half hitting 6-of-7 from the floor in the final frame.
Eric Dawson, who saw limited first half time due to foul trouble, collected his seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Tarleton got 23 points from Sheffield, with John Davis tallying 18 points and 14 rebounds. Nic Gamble added 17 points with six boards for the Texans.
The loss snapped MSU's 10-game homecourt winning streak and closed season series with the Texans.
MSU must quickly recover, as the Mustangs face Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday night at Stockton Court in Ligon Coliseum in LSC South play.
