WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State University Mustangs rattled off an 8-0 run to start the game and never looked back as they avenged an earlier loss to the Southern Arkansas Muleriders 73-50 in non-conference play at Gerald Stockton Court in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
MSU (7-4), snapped a two-game losing streak with the win and handed SAU (3-8) its fourth straight loss.
The MSU defense was superb, holding Southern Arkansas to just 37 percent from the floor and 27 percent from the three-point arc. MSU hit only 1-of-4 from the arc, but shot 47 percent from the floor as a whole. MSU also outrebounded the Muleriders 45-24.
MSU held SAU scoreless for the first six minutes of the game, causing the Riders to use two timeouts in the run. In fact, the MSU defenders so frustrated Southern that the Riders called all five of its timeouts in the first 14:30 of the first half.
Midwestern dominated the inside game, with junior
Eric Dawson collecting 24 points and a season-high 16 rebounds during the contest, and added five steals and four blocks to lead the team as well.
Chad Rickett knocked down 14 points, while
Chris Francois tallied 12 points for MSU.
Kenny Langhorne led SAU with 16 points, 12 in the second half, as the only Mulerider in double figures. Leon Stone totaled nine points, as both Stone and Langhorne led the team with four rebounds each.
Midwestern State opens Lone Star Conference South Division play on Tuesday, as it travels to Stephenville to face 17th ranked Tarleton State. The game follows the MSU-TSU women's contest and will tip about 8 p.m.
