BLACKWATER DRAW, N.M. – Midwestern State University quarterback
Daniel Polk smashed the school record for rushing as he led MSU to a 62-27 over Eastern New Mexico Saturday night in Lone Star Conference South play.
Polk, a 6-2, 206 pound sophomore from Dallas/South Oak Cliff, collected 244 yards rushing on only 12 carries to obliterate the old MSU record of 210 yards set by Stephon Brockington against Tarleton State on Sept. 9, 1995.
Polk broke the record in style, needing three yards to tie the record in the third quarter, he broke free for a 37-yard gain down to the ENMU 31 and left the game.
Polk had touchdown runs of 26 and 33 yards in the game. He also completed 7-of-11 passes for 149 yards with touchdowns of 61 and 24 yards with no interceptions.
He accounted for 393 of MSU's season-high 648 yards of total offense against the Greyhounds.
MSU (5-4 overall, 4-4 in all LSC games and 2-3 in the LSC South) didn't score first.
Eastern (4-6, 4-5, 2-4) took the opening kickoff and drove 67 yards before settling for a 26-yard Lee Price field goal.
But it was all MSU after that as the Indians scored on their first five possessions and seven of their nine first half possessions.
MSU ended the game scoring on 11 of its 14 possessions in the game.
Polk wasn't the Indians only weapon, as junior
Ross Harrison carried the ball only nine times for 83 yards. Receiver
Myron Cooper caught three passes for 90 yards and a touchdown, while receiver
Darrius Richard caught two passes, both touchdowns, totaling 85 yards.
Sophomore place kicker
Kristian Foster had a perfect night as well, kicking all eight points-after-touchdowns and adding field goals of 39 and 43 yards. His 14 points is the most kicking points in a game for an MSU kicker since the program was restarted in 1988.
One of the more interesting aspects of the game came in the first quarter when the two teams combined to score three touchdowns in 32 seconds – all from scrimmage.
The first was Polk finding Richard for a 61-yard scoring pass with 4:05 to play in the opening quarter.
Two plays after the kickoff to return the ball to Eastern, the Greyhounds Michael Benton found a wide-open Fide Davalos who completed a 64-yard touchdown reception at the 3:46 mark. ENMU kicked it back to the Indians.
On the first play of that possession, Polk again went to the air, hitting
Myron Cooper in stride who scored from 59 yards out at the 3:33 mark.
Four plays, plus two kickoffs and a total of 21 points between the squads.
Benton led ENMU rushing for 169 yards on 17 carries, while completing only 4-of-13 passes for 75 yards with an interception.
The game marked the first time MSU had tallied 60 points in a contest since beating Southeastern Oklahoma State 61-37 on Oct. 20, 2001, and the most points since beating Western New Mexico 82-6 on Oct. 13, 2001.
Midwestern State closes the season next Saturday as they host Abilene Christian in a 1 p.m. game at Memorial Stadium.
