Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

MSU goes overtime to beat Mesa State 2-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Freshman Maghan Holmes got a breakaway goal in the second overtime period to lead the Midwestern State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Mesa State College (Colo.) Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

Holmes got a feed from Morgan Bishop near the center circle, then juked past Mesa State goalkeeper Stephanie Burgess who came out and popped in a left foot shot at exactly 103 minutes.  It was the freshman from Corpus Christi/Flower Bluff's first goal of the season and evened MSU's record at 4-4-1 overall.

MSU seemed to dominate the contest and scored in the 44th minute when sophomore Tory Broadhurst fed freshman Courtney Tonn who collected a breakaway goal.

However, MSU could not put the Mavericks away.  A penalty against MSU at the 84:20 mark allowed Mesa's Emily Mues to put away a penalty kick past MSU keeper Elli O'Dwyer to tie the game at 1-all.

MSU outshot Mesa 20-14 in the physical contest, including 4-0 in the overtime periods.  O'Dwyer collected six saves, with Mesa's Burgess posting seven saves.

The Lady Indians are off until Friday when they visit West Texas A&M for a 2 p.m. contest in Canyon to resume Lone Star Conference play.
