Derek McGinnis begins his first season as graduate assistant coach for wide receivers at Midwestern State.
 
McGinnis served the last two years as a student-assistant for his alma mater at Washburn following a strong two-year run as the starting quarterback for the Ichabods.
 
McGinnis threw 42 touchdowns, while finishing seventh on Washburn's all-time passing list with 4,753 yards. He finished his career second in passing yards per game at 206.7 earning all-MIAA honors as a senior.
 
McGinnis competed three seasons as a reserved quarterback at North Dakota State prior to his transfer to Topeka. He was a part of three NCAA FCS championship teams redshirting in 2012 before competing in a combined six games in 2013 and 2014.
 
He was a two-time, first-team all-state quarterback at Crete (Neb.) High School leading the Cardinals to a Class B state championship in 2010 and a runner-up finish in 2011. McGinnis posted a 31-6 record as a starter including a 25-game winning streak with three district titles.
