Jeff Ray enters his 17th year as the Director of Golf at Midwestern State going into the 2022-23 academic year.

Ray has served as the head of the men's golf program since its re-inception in 2006 then assumed direction of the newly created women's golf program in 2010.

Under his direction, the men have advanced to NCAA Division II Super Regional play 13 times - 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022. The Mustangs earned their first berth in the NCAA Division II Championships in 2022.

Ray has mentored five PING Division II All-Americans including Santiago Gomez (2013), Derek Oland (2014, 2015), Jared Baker (2017), Jake Doggett (2020, 2021, 2022) and Garrett Leek (2021), seven All-South Central Region performers, nine first-team All-Lone Star Conference players and five second-team all-league selections.

Four Midwestern State men's golfers have claimed six LSC Player of the Year honors including Oland in 2014 and 2015, Doggett in 2019 and 2022, Baker in 2017, and Leek in 2021. Three different Mustangs have won four LSC individual championships including Oland in 2014 and 2015, Gomez in 2013, and Doggett in 2021.

The women's program produced regional individual qualifiers in each of its two seasons of play before the team advanced to NCAA II Super Region play in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018.

Kendra Whittley and Taylor Klutts advanced to the NCAA II Super Region 4 championships as freshmen in 2010 with Klutts returning to the same stage in 2011. In 2018, Ray guided freshman Emily Brennan to NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year honors, ending at the NCAA Division II Championships.

Ray was tabbed Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year after leading the team to a seventh-place showing at the NCAA II Super Regional and a runner-up finish at the LSC Championships as MSU was ranked as high as No. 9 in the Golf World/WGCA national rankings in 2013 after earning the same honor while lead MSU to a LSC runner-up showing and its first NCAA postseason showing in 2012.

Ray has coached two WGCA All American in Brenna Moore (2014) and Emily Brennan (2018), five first-team All-LSC selections and five second-team all-league performers.

Ray has been a part of the MSU Athletics family for 36 of the last 40 years as a player, administrator or coach.

Prior to taking the reins of the golf program, Ray enjoyed a stellar basketball coaching career at Midwestern State serving 12 seasons at the helm of the men’s program and two seasons leading the women’s team.

He led the women's basketball program to NAIA national tournament appearances in 1993 and 1994 before taking over the men's program from the legendary Dr. Gerald Stockton prior to the 1994-95 season.

Ray piloted the program to four Lone Star Conference championships (1999, 2000, 2007, 2009) and four NCAA Division II South Central Regional appearances.

Ray served two six-year tenures as men’s basketball coach. The first was from 1994-2000 before returning as MSU’s Director of Athletics from 2002-05 before relinquishing the position to concentrate on his basketball coaching duties in his second stint from 2003-09.

Playing Career

Ray played two seasons for legendary coach Dr. Gerald Stockton, transferring to Midwestern State from 1982-84 after playing one season each at Midland Junior College and Cooke County College. During his senior year, he helped the Indians to a 25-6 record, the District 8 championship and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament. He led the team in assists and free throw percentage that year and received the team's Most Inspirational Award.

Born in Okeene, Okla., Ray is a graduate of Archer City High School and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Midwestern State University.

Personal

Ray and his wife, Ruth Ann, have to two grown sons - Phillip and Joshua.
