Adrian McDonald begins his second season as an assistant coach at Midwestern State in charge of defensive backs in 2022.
He spent the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant at Texas State serving under defensive coordinator Zac Spavital, who coach him at the University of Houston.
Playing Career
McDonald enjoyed a stellar collegiate career at the University of Houston.
During his four-year career, he accumulated 299 tackles, 17 interceptions and seven fumble recoveries and seven forced fumbles while playing in 49 games and making 42 consecutive starts for the Cougars.
McDonald was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which is presented to the nation's top defensive back and a two-time All-American Athletic Conference selection at Houston. He was on the watch list for the Wuerffel and Nagurski trophies as a senior. He was also on the 2012-13 Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
His 17 career interceptions set a school record and he is second on the school's career chart with 286 interception return yards. He ranks third with seven fumble recoveries and fifth with seven forced fumbles in his career.
McDonald signed as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2016 surviving to the final cut. He was inked to a futures contract following the campaign.
Personal
McDonald earned a bachelor's degree at Houston in 2016 and completed a master's degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas State in 2020.
He is a native of nearby Lawton, Okla. where he stared at quarterback at Eisenhower High School.
