Mustangs swept in close battle with UT Tyler

TYLER, Texas — Midwestern State (5–29, 3–21) faced off against UT Tyler (28–8, 20–4) in a doubleheader on Sunday at Irwin Field, resulting in two closely contested games. In the first game, The Mustangs fell 7–2, while the second matchup ended in a narrow defeat of 2–1.

In the first game, Midwestern State managed three hits and scored both of its runs in the fifth inning. UT Tyler tallied 11 hits and secured the victory with a strong start, scoring two runs in the first and third innings, and three more in the fourth. UT Tyler took an early lead in the first inning with Layne Reh's two-RBI single, bringing in Taryn Barney and Dezirae Lopez. The inning ended with UT Tyler ahead 2–0. In the third inning, Sydney Linn's RBI single brought home Berlyn Grossman, followed by Keona Wells' RBI single, extending the Patriots lead to 4–0. The fourth inning saw UT Tyler adding three more runs, with Layne Reh walking with the bases loaded, scoring Anna Elliott. Megan Lau's two-RBI single brought home Kaelyn Lerma and Reh, putting the score at 7–0. 

Midwestern State got on the board in the fifth inning when an error allowed Sydnie Rios and Stormy Daniel to score unearned runs, ending the inning with a score of 7–2 in favor of the Patriots. Sydnie Rios scored one run and recorded one hit, while Stormy Daniel added a hit and scored once. Audrey Sierra pitched three innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits and three walks, taking the loss. Shyanne Florence appeared in relief, surrendering three earned runs on two hits and a walk in just 1/3 of an inning. Kaylin Salazar provided stability from the bullpen, pitching 2 2/3 innings without allowing any runs, yielding three hits and striking out none.

In the second game, The Mustangs managed to score once in the fifth inning but couldn't overcome the Patriots' two-run second inning. UT Tyler took the lead in the second inning, with Dezirae Lopez hitting an RBI single down the left-field line, allowing Megan Lau to score. Laci Berecochea followed with another RBI single to center field, scoring Keona Wells, ending the second inning with Texas-Tyler leading 2–0. 

Midwestern State responded in the fifth inning when Mia Sanchez singled through the left side and eventually scored on a fielder's choice by Chipper Mayorga, cutting the deficit to 2–1. However, MSU was unable to capitalize on further opportunities, leaving runners on base. Hayeli Acosta contributed with two hits and a walk, achieving an OPS of 1.417, while Mayorga added one hit and recorded an RBI. Sanchez tallied a run and one hit. Kayleigh Bowers pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out one and walking three, ending the game with a WHIP of 1.57. Isabela Cornell came in as relief, pitching 2/3 inning without allowing a hit.
