Lubbock Christian wins 13-inning opener and sweeps doubleheader

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State faced Lubbock Christian in a doubleheader at Mustangs Park, suffering a 3-2 loss in the 13 innings before the Lady Chaps won the nightcap, 5-0.

In the first game, the Mustangs managed six hits, with their runs coming in the seventh and eighth innings, while Lubbock Christian sealed the victory with a decisive run in the 13th inning. 

The scoring began in the fifth inning when Lubbock Christian took a 1-0 lead with an RBI double. The Mustangs responded in the seventh when Erikha Ibarra-Subia doubled down the left field line and later scored on Madison Stewart's RBI single, tying the game at 1-1. In the eighth inning, both teams scored, with LCU reclaiming the lead with an RBI triple. MSU quickly answered back as Hayeli Acosta reached on a fielding error, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Stormy Daniel's infield single, leveling the score at 2-2 after the eighth.

The game remained deadlocked until the 13th inning when the Chaparrals broke the tie with an RBI single, which proved decisive. The Maroon & Gold were unable to generate further offense in the bottom half of the inning, concluding the game with a final score of Lubbock Christian 3, Midwestern State 2.

Erikha Ibarra-Subia collected two hits, including a double, in six plate appearances. Stewart recorded an RBI on one hit and was hit by a pitch once in five trips to the plate. Chipper Mayorga reached base twice with one hit and one walk in five appearances. Daniel stole two bases while also contributing one hit and an RBI in five plate appearances. Kayleigh Bowers started the game for the Mustangs, pitching 7 2/3 innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out two and walking three. Isabela Cornell pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief, allowing one earned run and striking out two while walking two, with 43 strikes from 72 pitches.

In the second game, Midwestern State managed four hits but left five runners on base and was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities

Lubbock Christian took control early in the second inning with a two-run double by Alexis Clark, establishing a 2-0 lead. The third inning saw the Chaparrals extend their lead further, scoring three runs, including an RBI double by Brianna Chambers-Lee, making it 5-0.

Midwestern State had opportunities to score but could not capitalize. In the first inning, Erikha Ibarra-Subia was hit by a pitch and Chipper Mayorga singled, but the team left two runners stranded. The third inning featured a fielding error by the Chaparrals, allowing Sydnie Rios to advance to third and Mayorga to second, yet no runs scored. Despite four hits, the Mustangs were unable to mount a comeback, with LCU's pitching and defense holding strong, resulting in a decisive victory. The final score was Lubbock Christian 5, Midwestern State 0.

Sydnie Rios posted one hit in three at-bats and contributed three assists from third base. Mayorga collected two hits in three plate appearances, advancing two runners. Tatum Waller finished with one hit, a double, in her three at-bats. Audrey Sierra pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief, allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out two batters. Shyanne Florence, who started the game, pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up five hits and four earned runs, while striking out one.

Looking ahead, Midwestern State will host Angelo State on Friday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. at Mustangs Park in Wichita Falls, Texas.
