BETHANY, Okla. – Following a 1-1-1 homestand, Midwestern State hits the road for a match with the reigning four-time GAC/MIAA regular season champions, Southern Nazarene. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday night at Wes Harmon Field.
Midwestern State (2-1-2) is coming off a 1-0 win over No. 17-ranked St. Mary's as
Jaime Villagomez scored in the eighth minute, assisted by
Skyler Krchnak, and the Mustangs held on for a non-conference victory against its rival from San Antonio.
Villagomez became the fifth player to score a goal for MSU this season, and he is one of three Mustangs to have a goal and an assist through the first five matches of the season. Krchnak recorded his first assist of the campaign.
Parker Plaxco leads Midwestern State and is fifth in the Lone Star Conference with five points. Plaxco has two goals and an assist for the Mustangs, who have outscored opponents 6-5 this season.
Davis Mays and
Liam Pritchard each have a goal and an assist for MSU, which is third in the LSC with 1.2 goals per game and 3.4 points per game.
The Mustangs are averaging 14.4 shots per game, which is second most among LSC programs, but they are fourth in the league with 4.8 shots on goal per game.
Plaxco leads the league with four shots per game, and he is putting half his shots on frame, leading the league with two shots on goal per match.
Goalkeeper
Daniel Robles has played the last two matches for Midwestern State and is 1-1-0 with a 0.50 goals-against average. The senior from Tyler, Texas, has allowed one goal while making eight saves for a save percentage of .889.
Jake Morris was the MSU goalkeeper for the first three matches of the season, and he has a 1.33 goals-against average with a save percentage of .500.
Midwestern State is meeting Southern Nazarene (2-2-0) for the 29th time in program history and leads the all-time series, 24-4-0. MSU has won its last eight meetings with SNU, including a 2-0 victory at Stang Park last season as
Mere Escobar converted two penalty kicks for the Mustangs.
Southern Nazarene has not beaten Midwestern State since a 4-3 victory at home in 1996. Three of its four wins in the series have been on the Southern Nazarene home pitch. Midwestern State has won seven matches as the visitor in the series, which started in 1978.
The Crimson Storm rebounded from two losses to start the season by defeating McKendree, 2-1, in Claremore, Oklahoma, and SNU is coming off a 1-0 victory at West Texas A&M last weekend.
Midwestern State will be the third LSC opponent that Southern Nazarene has faced. Oklahoma Christian defeated the Crimson Storm 1-0 in the season opener at Wes Harmon Field — Southern Nazarene's only home match of the season.
Braxton Decker, Junior Duran and Luis Urquiza have scored goals for Southern Nazarene this season.
Goalkeeper Aimar Aramendia is 2-2-0 with 13 saves and a goals-against average of 0.75. The sophomore more from Spain has a save percentage of .813.
Midwestern State will play two matches at Toyota Soccer Center in Frisco, Texas, next week. The Mustangs meet Northwest Nazarene on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before squaring off with Western Oregon in a 2:30 p.m. match on Saturday afternoon.
