SAN ANTONIO – No. 8-ranked Midwestern State wraps up the regular season on Wednesday night as it visits St. Mary's at Sigma Beta Chi Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Midwestern State (11-3-3, 7-2-0) needs a win at St. Mary's and a UT Dallas loss or draw in its season finale at UT Tyler in order to win the Lone Star Conference regular season championship. The Mustangs will be the No. 1 seed in the LSC Postseason Tournament either way because UT Dallas is ineligible for the postseason as it transitions to Division II.
The Mustangs have reeled off three consecutive 2-0 victories over West Texas A&M, Lubbock Christian and Sul Ross State since suffering a 2-0 loss to UT Dallas at home on Oct. 18. MSU also lost to St. Edward's in the LSC opener, 2-1, at Stang Park.
Midwestern State is 4-0-2 in true road games this season, and the Stangs have not conceded a goal in their last three away matches. MSU is outscoring its hosts this season, 18-4.
Midwestern State has posted a clean sheet in each of its last six victories and has shut out nine opponents during this campaign. MSU is outscoring its opponents through 17 matches this season, 33-14, which is the best goal differential in the LSC.
Following back-to-back 2-0 wins over Lubbock Christian and Sul Ross State,
Jake Morris was named the Lone Star Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, and
Ethan Krchnak garnered Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Morris, a sophomore from Parker, Colorado, matched his career-high with six saves in the Mustangs' 2-0 victory at Lubbock Christian. Morris has five clean sheets this season and has not conceded a goal in his last 209 minutes. Morris also received the honor in late September after making six saves in a 2-0 win over Western Oregon at Toyota Soccer Complex in Frisco, Texas.
Krchnak has been a stalwart in the back all season for the Mustangs. The redshirt sophomore from Pearland, Texas, had a goal and an assist during the regular season home finale as Midwestern State defeated Sul Ross State. Krchnak has two goals and three assists this season.
Parker Plaxco leads the highest scoring team in the LSC and is second in the conference with 10 goals and 23 points.
Alan Rivera has scored five goals while
Cooper Tea and
Liam Kervick have each scored four goals for the Mustangs.
Liam Pritchard and
Jaime Villagomez lead the team with four assists each, and they have each scored two goals this season.
Dereck Espinal has also scored twice for the Mustangs, who lead the conference with 28 assists and 5.53 points per game.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with St. Mary's 40-5-0, including a 1-0 victory in a non-conference match earlier this season at Stang Park.
Skyler Krchnak assisted Villagomez on a goal in the 8th minute, and
Daniel Robles made six saves for the Mustangs, who have won their last six meetings with the Rattlers.
Midwestern State is 14-4-0 when visiting St. Mary's and won its last three matches against the Rattlers at Sigma Beta Chi Field, including a 2-1 victory in the LSC Men's Soccer Championship last November.
St. Mary's (3-7-6, 2-6-1) has lost four of its last five games and is coming off a 2-1 loss at West Texas A&M.
The Rattlers have the third-lowest goals-against average in the LSC at 1.18, but despite taking the second-most shots on goal in the league, St. Mary's is ninth in the conference with 11 goals this season.
Goalkeeper Johnny Thurbin has five clean sheets this season, and he has the second-most saves in the LSC with 48 in 16 matches.
Thurbin, a senior from England, made three saves against Midwestern State in the first meeting of the season on Sept. 17.
Enzo Jaques, Luke Mulkey, Gael Gallegos and Cooper Stephens have all scored two goals for the Rattlers this season and are tied for the team lead. Jaques and Mulkey each have five points.
Midwestern State is hosting a semifinal match in the Lone Star Conference Championship on Nov. 12. The opponent is to be determined, and kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
