CANYON, Texas -- No. 5-ranked Midwestern State snapped a three-match losing streak in its rivalry with No. 18-ranked West Texas A&M, but the Mustangs had to settle for 1-1 draw Wednesday night at The Pitch.
The action was delayed by more than a half hour because of inclement weather.
Rory Doyle opened the scoring in the 21st minute.
Brandon Martinez-Trelles started the attack for Midwestern State with a pass up the left channel to
Sulahmana Bah.
Just as Bah was entering the area along the end line, the WT defender, Yotam Balbul, stumbled to the ground. Bah had plenty of time to set up Doyle in the middle of the box. Doyle cracked a one-timer from 12 yards out past goalkeeper Alfonso Aragon for his third goal of the season.
Doyle has earned at least one point in five consecutive matches for the Mustangs and is tied with
Mere Escobar for the team lead with eight points in six matches this season.
The Mustangs maintained the lead until the 81st minute.
WT forced a turnover at midfield and mounted an attack from the right side. Payne McKiver fed the ball to Giancarlo Saldana, who sprinted into the box. MSU goalkeeper
Adam Braman moved to his left and attempted to dive on the ball outside the 6-yard box but failed to grab the ball. With the goal wide open, Saldana centered a pass for Kenny Brown, who chipped in a goal with his right heel and tied the game.
West Texas A&M is 2-1-3 through its first six matches, and Midwestern State is 5-0-1.
The Maroon & Gold return home for a Wednesday night clash with Oklahoma Christian. Kickoff at Stang Park is scheduled for 7 p.m.
