KINGSVILLE, Texas -- After the Midwestern State defense held Texas A&M-Kingsville to a three-and-out with 3 1/2 minutes to play, the Mustangs had the Hoggies right where they wanted them.
MSU trailed by three points and had the ball on its own 1-yard line with just one timeout remaining.
The road to the comeback was simple -- just give it to freshman running back
Peyton Shaw.
The results? Shaw run left for 42 yards. Run left for 5 more. Then, burst through a hole on the right side for 39 more yards to Texas A&M-Kingsville's 13 yard-line.
It was time for Shaw to get a break, so fellow frosh
Devin Cross bullied his way 12 yards to the 1 before senior
Trenton Kennedy ran free up the middle to finish off a rousing 41-37 win over the Javelinas.
Five plays. All runs. For 99 yards.
Oh, yes. Then the defense survived TAMUK's rally that ended on the 10-yard line when time expired.
The victory cinched a winning season for the Mustangs, who won their third consecutive game to improve to 6-4, while sending TAMUK (7-3) to its third consecutive loss.
Shaw accounted for 84 of his career-best 145 yards on the final drive as the Mustangs chewed up 250 rushing yards against a previously stingy Hoggie defense. The McKinney Boyd High School product also scored three touchdowns -- all in the first half.
Kennedy added 69 yards on 12 carries, while Cross finished with 64 yards on 11 carries.
MSU fifth-year senior
Dillon Sterling-Cole completed 15-of-23 passes for a season-high 277 yards including a 35-yard touchdown to
Kylan Harrison to give MSU a 34-27 lead early in the third quarter.
Harrison logged his sixth collegiate 100-yard receiving game finishing with 118 yards on four receptions as the Mustangs amassed 527 yards of total offense. That was the most allowed by the Javelina defense this season.
Senior
Justin Guillory and sophomore
Antonio Brunson paced the MSU defense with 10 tackles each, while senior
Melik Owens finished with 1 1/2 sacks.
Midwestern State takes on No. 2-ranked Angelo State in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
