WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State put a halt on a four-game slide by putting the clamps on the Lone Star Conference scoring leaders Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Mustangs (5-9, 1-2 LSC) limited St. Edward's to its lowest scoring output in nine years to battle their way to a 60-50 win.
It was the fewest points for the Hilltoppers since a Chris Beard-coached McMurry squad beat SEU 59-49 on Feb. 2, 2013.
MSU's defensive effort resulted in the worst shooting night of the season for St. Edward's which shot 30 percent from the field (18-of-60) while equaling its worst effort from the arc (5-of-29 / 17.2 percent).
Meanwhile, senior forward
Jermane Carter delivered an efficient performance going 8-of-11 from the field knocking down a season-best four 3-pointers to book a game-high 20 points. It was his fourth game with at least 20 points this season.
Freshman
Jordan Teal came within a rebound of his first collegiate double-double cutting through the lane to finish with 15 points and nine rebounds.
But Teal's true effort came on the defensive end where he split the primary duty of covering St. Edward's senior guard Daniel Venzant with sophomore
Pierre Sanders.
Venzant, who came into the night as the LSC's second leading scorer at 20.2 points per game, was held to eight points on 3-of-14 shooting.
Midwestern State limited the Hilltoppers top three scoring threats to a combined 16 points under average.Â
Senior Uche Dibiamaka did improve on his 14.2 points per game average by scoring a 16 points, but was restricted to five points in the second half.Â
Junior Mason Hix was held five points shy of his average of 13.4 points over the last eight games.
Overall, St. Edward's fell 30 points shy of its team season scoring average of 81.8 points per game.
Senior
Jalin Brown scored eight points pulling down a career-high 15 rebounds, while Sanders added eight points off of the bench.
Midwestern State takes on St. Mary's Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
