CANYON, Texas – Midwestern State struck for two early goals in a 90-second frame to claim a 2-0 win over No. 16 St. Mary's in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament semifinals Saturay night at The Pitch.
The Mustangs (7-2-1) earn a final round matchup with No. 6 West Texas A&M Monday at The Pitch. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
Mere Escobar bagged his fifth goal on the season on a back pass from
Trevor Amann in the 8th minute off of a counterattack which gained speed following STMU's corner. Amann found space with the cleared ball and pushed it past one defender. A lucky bounce took him past another and he dribbled past a third to the touch line. A diagonal ball across the face of the goal was finished by Escobar to put the Mustangs ahead.
Junior
Carlos Flores followed up a minute later with a goal of his own. The midfielder received a long ball over the top from his brother,
Jasub Flores. Flores touched past the St. Mary's player and into the six-yard box. He megged another and blasted into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead for Midwestern state.
Amann notched two more shots while Escobar added one before the half ended.
Taylor Lampe didn't have much to do in the first with STMU only getting one shot off and claiming three corners. Andre Schlaefli put up three saves on MSU's nine shots.
MSU started strong beginning the second half by registering six straight shots within the first ten.
Brandon Martinez-Trelles marked three of the six and forced a save with two of them. The redshirt junior has his season-most shots in the night's match with four. The team did not let up as they recorded three corners and three shots before St. Mary's had an offensive strike.
The opposition finally recorded a corner kick in the 65th minute to begin their rally. Morgan Miller and Cian Foley both took tries at the goal but were not on target.
Amann added two more shots in the second half to put up six shots, the most this season for the LSC Player of the Year. Defender
Rory O'Keeffe also made a landmark with his four shots. Liam Morrison and
Yogi Vargas were booked in the 84th and 89th minutes, respectively.
In the end, MSU was able to hold off and outshoot STMU 25 to six with 13 landing on goal versus one. Schlaefli made ten total saves for the Rattlers while Lampe notched one in his 90-minute performance.
The championship game will take place on Monday, April 12 at 5 p.m. to claim the Lone Star Conference title. The Pitch in Canyon, Texas will host again to determine the winner.
