WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State adds another tally to the win column after a thorough dismantle of Dallas Baptist on Tuesday night. Five players contributed to the six goal-palooza in the Lone Star Conference match at Stang Park. With the win, the team moves to 4-2-1 in the spring semester.
Julian Barajas kicked the game off for MSU with a high shot over Alexander Knepper, who was in goal for the Patriots. The senior was able to redeem in the 12th minute after a flick from
Trevor Amann. Barajas settled the ball dribbled right, shot across his body, and found the lower corner for his third goal of the season. Amann tallied his first assist this year.
The Mustangs stuck again ten minutes later, this time from a right place, right time situation by
Adam Conway after a DBU defender tried to clear the ball away from the goal. The defender's close range put-back is his first tally this year and fourth career.
By this time, Dallas Baptist was down by two with 25 still to play in the first half. Emmanuel Loni picked up a yellow card following a hard challenge.
Knepper also picked up a warning when tackled
Mark Alvarado in the box after Alvarado was in on goal from a give and go with
Yogi Vargas. The referee awarded a penalty kick for the infringement and redshirt senior,
Rory O'Keeffe, stepped up to the spot. The Irishman made a clean convert and the home side took a three-goal lead.
The remainder of the first skirted by with DBU picking up four shots, one corner, and three saves. MSU put up 12 shots, 2 saves, and 4 corner kicks.
Less than ten minutes into the second half, Alvarado slipped a ball in-between two defenders for Amann to run on to and slide into the side netting. This counted for Alvarado's first Mustang point and Amann's seventh goal this year.
Another ten minutes later,
Carlos Flores struck in Midwestern State's fifth goal of the game. A redirect of Barajas' shot fell to the back post where Flores was able to notch his second goal of 2021.
Amann grabbed the brace in the 72nd minute when he tallied the final score for MSU and eight goals for the spring. Shortly after,
Victor Rubio Lopez picked up a yellow after pulling down the Patriot's Mason Wallak.
The final whistle saw Dallas Baptist complete the game with five shots with three on goal, nine saves, and five corners. MSU took 27 shots – a season high thus far – with 15 on goal, three saves, and seven corners.
Taylor Lampe recorded his first win of the season in his 90-minute performance.
The Mustangs will compete in their final away match on Tuesday, March 30. The team will face UT Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas, at 5:30 p.m. in a Lone Star Conference competition.
