LAWTON, Okla. – Midwestern State women's basketball will not go down without a fight, especially senior
Morgan Lenahan, who put up 20 points in the second half against Cameron to try to propel the Mustangs to the top. Unfortunately, the Aggies overcame their efforts with the final score of 87-76. The quarterfinal game of the Lone Star Conference Tournament at Aggie Gym might mark the end of the 2020-21 season for MSU.
"I'm so proud of these girls for the comeback that we made," said head coach
Christopher Reay. "We cut the lead to one with 5:20 to go and we turned it over twice, they got the lead back to five at the blink of an eye and that really hurt."
The game was a tough pill to swallow. A rough second quarter gave CU the edge they needed to outlast the Mustangs.
"We had that run in the second quarter that really hurt us. This one hurts, but I am proud of the girls," Reay said.
The first quarter was fairly even between the two teams. Cameron ended the first with 18 points, six rebounds, and eight turnovers as a team. Midwestern State sat at 19 points with ten turnovers and nine rebounds.
In the second, the Mustangs gained 15 points versus the Aggies' 30, going eight of 13 from deep. At halftime, the CU lead 48-34, gaining 19 points off turnovers.
"So proud of these girls for their fight. They easily could have laid down but right from the start of the second they came out swinging and I could not ask for anything more," explained Reay.
And fight they did. The team scored 26 points in the third quarter to trail by only three going into the final period. The defense kept Cameron at 15 points, with seven coming from free throws and the other eight off field goals. The home team was zero of five in threes.
The Aggies made a quick start to the fourth with eight unanswered points in the first 1:30. Like Reay mentioned, the Mustangs did battle back to come within one, but a ten point run push the home squad up.
Lenahan led both teams for the game with 32 points and 13 rebounds, almost getting the triple double with eight assists. The guard put forth her best game of the year in multiple categories including points (32), field goals made (11), three-pointers made (4), rebounds (13), and assists (8).
"A huge shout out to
Morgan Lenahan with 32 points. She definitely carried us today with Frances chipping in, along with Hannah and Haevyn."
Frances King tallied 12 points and five rebounds. The sophomore recorded her season high in steals with four, two in the first quarter.
Hannah Reynolds was second for the team in points with 15. The forward also had two season highs in blocks (4) and steals (1).
Haevyn Risley ended her Lone Star playing career with 12 points, nine rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
"We've made comebacks during the season and this was tough to do," said Reay.
Though it was tough, the team put their best effort in. Though conference play is finished for the Mustangs, they have a chance to be selected into the NCAA Division II South Central Regionals. As of Feb. 24, the program is one of ten under consideration for six spots in the regional postseason advancement.
