OKLAHOMA CITY -- Justin Leslie had two simple fixes to get Midwestern State back on track Saturday afternoon inside the Eagles' Nest at the Payne Athletic Center.
First was simple. Make more shots, particularly around the basket.
But it was the second that paid the quickest dividends as the Mustangs rolled to an 85-76 win over Oklahoma Christian to snap a six-game losing streak.
Junior forward
Luke Hamilton knocked down six of his seven shots including five triples in the first half spearheaded the Mustangs to 61.5-percent shooting to take a six-point lead into the break.
"One of the biggest adjustments we made was to put Luke in the primary post position all day," Leslie said. "The step outs presented themselves at a high rate. He took advantage of those."
Hamilton finished the game on 20 points and closed out his second consecutive double-double with 10 rebounds. He got plenty of help from his teammates.
Sophomore guard
Terrell Wilson connected on 7-of-10 shots to net 17 points, while junior
Trae Jones knocked down four triples to net double figures for the second time this season with 13 points.
Juniors
Jalin Brown and
Derrick Ogechi added 10 points apiece as the Mustangs finished the game shooting 52.6 percent from the field.
"The biggest difference today was we made some shots," Leslie said. "We didn't finish many of those last night, but we were able to put them away at a very high rate today."
Oklahoma Christian (4-9) managed to shoot 41.4 percent from the floor led by junior Shem'mario Stephens, who tallied 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
"I didn't get much sleep last night," Leslie said. "I clipped film from all season and compared it to last night. We had a very competitive shoot around today. We got on the floor today and made consistent multiple efforts today."
Midwestern State (8-7) takes on nationally ranked West Texas A&M Thursday at the First United Bank Center in Canyon. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
