ODESSA, Texas -- It might not have been Midwestern State's best game of the season, but the effort was good enough Saturday afternoon at the Falcon Dome.
The Mustangs scored nine consecutive points coming out of the final media timeout which was good enough to stave off UT Permian Basin 71-61.
That good enough to extend the Mustangs' current winning streak to four consecutive which was also good enough to push MSU into the No. 6 seed in next week's Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament.
All of that against a struggling UT Permian Basin team which has now lost five consecutive games but is sliding into the postseason with the No. 7 seed.
"They really did everything they could to slow everything down tonight and not allow us to find any rhythm in transition tonight," MSU coach
Justin Leslie said. "They didn't want to get into a track meet with us tonight. It frustrated us tonight and forced us into a grind."
The grind was also good enough for the Mustangs to earn their first win in six trips to the Falcon Dome and close the regular season with an 11-7 record. The first winning ledger for MSU since finishing the 2015-16 with a 24-6 mark.
Midwestern gets a rematch with Dallas Baptist Tuesday night at the Burg Center where the Mustangs look to avenge a pair of one-point losses to the Patriots last month. Tipoff time is to be announced.
Junior guard
Derrick Ogechi connected on four 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 18 points. The last triple proved to be a dagger staking the Mustangs to a 65-57 lead with 1:40 to go.
"Before the last 3 that he hit, he made a great drive down the lane to score with the left hand," Leslie said. "We had been a little flat before that, but that got him going."
Freshman
Pierre Sanders connected on each of his six efforts from the charity stripe over the final 66 seconds to seal the victory. He finished with total of 10 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists.
Junior
Jermane Carter continued his stellar play delivering his second double-double of the campaign with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
"He is carrying a heavy load," Leslie said. "His ability to get to the boards on both ends of the floor is exceptional. He started getting to the free throw line when we were able to isolate him on their post players."
Senior guard Trevion Lamar threatened a triple-double finishing with 20 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to pace UT Permian Basin (8-11).
