Lenahan drops 20 in Mustangs' unfortunate fall to UT Tyler, 55-50

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Morgan Lenahan's 15 point second half almost pushed Midwestern State ahead of UT Tyler, but the Mustangs could not avail as they dropped their first home game of the season. With the 55-50 loss, MSU finds themselves at 5-3 with just one game left before starting Lone Star Conference play.

Midwestern State, usually shooting around 50 percent from the field, had their lowest shooting game of the season. The team shot only 27 percent, knocking down 16 of 59. Lenahan and Frances King each tallied two field goals to lead the team.

"We had trouble scoring though we had good looks," said Head Coach Christopher Reay. "All looks that we had been hitting all season up until this point."

Though the Mustangs struggled on offense, the defensive side shone. The home side held UT Tyler's leading scorer, Liah Davis, to just eight points. The center averaged almost 18 points per game prior to Monday's match. The Patriots also had their worst shooting game of the year with MSU holding them to just 40 percent from the field.

Lenahan's 11 points propelled Midwestern State over a 14-point hump in the third quarter. The senior went nine of ten from the line.

"We were executing and getting fouls while we were driving," said Reay. "We got to the free throw line and came out like we had arrived."

Clutch threes by Sheridan Bostic added to the comeback. The guard shot over 40 percent from behind the arc, draining five of 12 attempts for 15 points. Senior Hannah Reynolds grabbed ten boards while sophomore Jordan Mathis claimed three steals.

Redshirt senior Kelsey Crouse led UT Tyler with 16 points, going five of seven from the field and five of six from the charity strip. Forward Montse Gutierrez added ten points and seven rebounds to the mix.

Midwestern State is back in action in D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday, Dec. 16. The Mustangs take on Texas A&M-Commerce in their final non-conference game of 2021. The team kicks-off play in the LSC on Dec. 31, traveling to Commerce to take on the Lions again. Tip-off for Thursday's match is set for 5:30 p.m.
