Huzen stands tall, Mustangs break PK curse to claim LSC Postseason Tournament title

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State leaned on goalkeeper Marc-Antoine Huzen to end a run of heartbreak Sunday afternoon in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament championship match at Stang Park.

The senior from Paris, France made four big saves in regulation to earn his eighth shutout of the season as the Mustangs battled Lubbock Christian to a scoreless draw.

Then, Huzen's biggest save came on a dive to his left to make bottom-hand save on LCU's Hector Rodriguez-Cabo's second-round penalty attempt.

"I told the guys we have the best goalkeeper in the country on penalties," MSU coach Michael Meachum said. "He is going to save one. All you guys have to do is do your job."

That's exactly what the Mustangs did claiming the league title by winning the penalty round for the first time since 2007.

With that, MSU earns the automatic bid into the 2021 NCAA Division II Men's Championship. The field is set for release via a selection show on NCAA.com Monday afternoon at 5 p.m.

"We trust each other more than anyone else. Pick your spot, you hit it. If the keeper saves it, fair play. If it goes in, that's the goal," MSU senior James Doyle said. "We trust Marc in net. We know he's going to save one, maybe even two. One got called back and that was a little dodgy. We trust each other. That's the biggest thing."

Doyle ignite the Mustangs beating Braxton Doyle to the lower left in the opening round.

Huzen provided the opening for MSU diving to his left to make the save on Rodriguez-Cabo in the second round, then appeared to make a second save to his right on Pablo Galietero-Diez. But it was ruled that left his line early.

Midwestern State wasn't rattled. Senior Carlos Flores converted to the low left followed by successful conversions by Mere Escobar on a hesitation to the low right corner before Rory Doyle went to the upper-right portion of the net.

Senior forward Trevor Amann clinched it by going high middle in the final round.

"It shows a lot about our composure as a team and not feel the pressure," Amann said. "We are back on the right track as far as penalty shootouts."

MSU had lost its last four excursions into the penalties since using a 5-4 edge over Sonoma State to advance to the 2017 NCAA Division II national semifinals.

The Mustangs fell to Franklin Pierce (N.H.) 4-2 in the national semifinals in Orange Beach, Ala.

Midwestern State also fell in PKs to Cal Poly Pomona in the 2017 NCAA Division II quarterfinals before falling twice in 2018 -- to West Texas A&M in the Heartland Conference finals and to Colorado Mesa in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

"We grew a lot today," Meachum said.  "We were able to push our feelings, I thought we matured and fought for each other today. The group is starting to become a true team. Some teams are trying to take away things that we've done. We were able to adapt and do things we needed to get done."

Midwestern State is primed to make its eighth straight and 16th NCAA Division II postseason appearance.

Huzen earned tournament MVP honors and was joined on the all-conference team by Flores, Doyle, Escobar and Colby Parton.

"We had tremendous support from our crowd today," Meachum said. "You could have heard our fans and supporters from the other side of campus."
