WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State wiped away a long losing streak ending the season on a high note with a sweep of Cameron Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The resilient Mustangs shook off seven set points in the second frame to maintain momentum beating the Aggies – 29-27, 29-27, 25-17. The sweep of the second of the season for the Mustangs, who close the year with a 4-21 mark placing 17th in the Lone Star Conference with a 2-15 league record.
Sophomore
Lauryn Bourne hit a season-high .303 on the way to her 11th double-digit kill performance of the season finishing with a team-high 14 kills, while senior
Lissette Lefforge chipped in nine kills to go along with a campaign-best six total blocks.
The teams exchanged runs in the opening set, but the Aggies were unable to convert on any of their three set points. That allowed the Mustangs to overcome a five-point deficit earlier in the set before winning the last three points fueled by a pair of Bourne kills.
That was just a prelude to the second set when Cameron used a four-point run to push to set point at 24-21. The Mustangs rallied with consecutive kills by freshman
Alex Serna before Bourne put away another kill to knot the set at 24-all.
Midwestern State faced three more set points turning the Aggies away each time – with a kill. In fact, the Mustangs responded to each set point with a kill.
Just like in the first set, MSU closed with three consecutive points including a kill by
Kelli Ell before forcing consecutive attack errors to take control of the match.
Arianna Navarette paced the Aggies with 12 kills, while Anjolie Navarette added 10 kills.
The win snapped a program long 15-match losing streak for the Mustangs, while Cameron closed the season at 2-27 overall and 1-16 in league play.
