BELTON, Texas -- Midwestern State attacked the 3-point arc with reckless abandon Saturday afternoon on the way to a 93-70 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor at the Mayborn Campus Center.
The Mustangs washed a tough second half in Friday's exhibition loss at Stephen F. Austin by matching a school record with 19 3-pointers to improve to 6-1 on the season.
"There was no excuse for a back-to-back. It's more mental than anything else. We are starting to understand from a maturity standpoint," MSU coach
Justin Leslie said. "With the shooters we have, it was only a matter of time before we threatened the school record."
The Mustangs equaled the 19 triples set in a 106-69 win over East Central (Okla.) on Jan. 5, 2009 which were fueled by Nolan Richardson's individual single-game program high of 10 treys.
MSU used an equal opportunity approach to pile successes from beyond the arc against UMHB as 12 of the 13 players to log playing time attempted at least one 3-pointer. In all, the Mustangs added another program record amassing 47 attempts from beyond the arc.
Junior
Derrick Ogechi knocked five 3-pointers and went 7-of-12 from the field to finish with 21 points. The Brooklyn Park, Minn. native finished off his first double-double of the season pulling down a campaign-high 11 rebounds.
Junior
Luke Hamilton continued his season-long barrage hitting five triples of his own for 15 points, while sophomore
Terrell Wilson book four treys on his way to matching Ogechi for team-high honors with 21 points.
Freshman
Pierre Sanders connected on one triple closing the game with nine points and eight rebounds, while
Jalin Brown,
Evan McCarthy and
Drake Dusek also booked a 3-pointer each.
Midwestern State led by as many as 19 pointers in the early stages of the first half, but UMHB managed to claw its way back to within eight points after Carson Hammond hit consecutive triples to get the Crusaders to within 48-40 with 14:19 to play.
The Mustangs responded by scoring the next eight points and would lead by as many as 26 points down the stretch.
"We needed to see a different style. They forced us into a different defensive rotation than we have seen this year," Leslie said. "We had to adjust to different personnel where we didn't expect them. We were able to solve that."
Originally slated to play a pair of home games against Western New Mexico before they were wiped away due to COVID-19 concerns, the Mustangs quickly slated alternate games to hit the road for back-to-back games.
"We just had to get on the road and be together as a team," Leslie said. "This was the first chance we had to get away and be a team."
Midwestern State battles UT Tyler in a pair of Lone Star Conference crossover games Friday and Saturday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff for Friday is set for 7:30, while Saturday's contest begins at 5:30 p.m.
