WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State has made a habit of climbing out of big holes this season.
That was once again the case Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Mustangs charged back from 15 points down with 17:25 to play to force No. 14- ranked and unbeaten Lubbock Christian to overtime only to fall 83-82. It was the Mustangs' third loss by a single point in the last four games.
"They are a good team and if you make mistakes, they are going to make you pay," MSU coach
Justin Leslie said. "We made just enough."
Midwestern State worked their way out of the miscues by utilizing 3-pointers by
Luke Hamilton -- a high-arching shot from the right wing -- and
Terrell Wilson -- step-back triple from the left wing -- to send the game to overtime tied at 75-all.
The Mustangs never regained the lead in the extra period, but produced an opportunity to pull out the victory after
Pierre Sanders converted a tough layup with 35 seconds to go to pull MSU to within 83-82.
Lubbock Christian senior Parker Hicks misfired on the front end of a 1-and-1 allowing Wilson a look at the rim on the final possession.
"We knew we were going to attack in transition and we got the ball to him," Leslie said. "He's our best player on that little floater. He makes that more than anyone else on the roster. It's exactly what we wanted. We got the look and it just didn't go in."
Lubbock Christian connected on a season-high 15 3-pointers as a team while shooting 40.5 percent from beyond the arc led by sophomore Ty Caswell, who knocked down four 3-balls to finish with 17 points. Hicks and fellow senior Lloyd Daniels rattled in three triples to close with 19 and 17 points, respectively.
"Normally, we are a very good rebounding team. Four of their last five shots in regulation were second-chance shots. That just can't be the case," Leslie said. "We need to play 40 minutes. We have continued to just have flat spots early in the game. Not having a sense of urgency."
Hamilton connected on four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points while grabbing seven rebounds while
Jalin Brown,
Rommell Williams and Sanders all had 13 points for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State dropped its fifth straight game to fall to 7-6, while Lubbock Christian moved to 10-0.
The Mustangs hit the road to face Oklahoma Christian Friday afternoon at the Eagles' Nest inside Payne Athletic Center in Oklahoma City. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
