CANYON, Texas -- Midwestern State battled No. 3 West Texas A&M closes for the opening 27 minutes Thursday night at the First United Bank Center.
But after senior D'Monta Harris drilled a 3-pointer from the top of key with 13:24 to play, the dam burst as the Buffs scored 13 consecutive points on the way to an 82-58 rout of the Mustangs.
"We knew our margin for error was small," MSU coach
Justin Leslie said. "We were being very deliberate on the offensive end and it was frustrating them. We blew some coverages during that run that allowed them to score points."
West Texas A&M ran away for its 19th straight win and 41st consecutive victory on its home floor while clinching an outright Lone Star Conference title.
Midwestern State did all it could to stay within five points at the half, while clinging to its LSC postseason tournament hopes. The Mustangs struggled to 31.3-percent shooting and connected on 4-of-17 of its 3-point opportunities.
"We were missing shots. I honestly thought we were able to get great looks," Leslie said. "We got so many looks around the rim that we just missed. We had a count on the bench that we missed nine, but this is big boy basketball. You have to finish around the rim."
The Mustangs held WT top scorers Qua Grant (11 points on 13 shots) and JoJo Murray (15 points), but Jon'il Fugett provided scoring punch for the Buffs hitting 5-of-6 from the field with two triples to finish with a team-high 17 points.
"Fugett absolutely killed us. He made multiple 3s with a hand in his face," Leslie said. "We knew we had to give us something and he stepped up and took advantage of his opportunities."
The Buffs limited MSU to six made 3-pointers to snap a run of nine games in which the Mustangs connected on at least 10 triples.
Harris extended his run of double-figure scoring games by matching fellow senior guard
Darius Thompson with 15 points, while
Ola Ayodele had 12 points and five rebounds.
Midwestern State faces Eastern New Mexico to close the regular season Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Arena. Tip off is set for 5 p.m. (Central Time).
The Mustangs enter the finale tied for 15th just one game behind a group of five times tied for 10th with an 8-13 league record. The top 12 teams advance to next week's Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament.
