OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Midwestern State had game-planned all week for Oklahoma Christian's 2-3 zone.
Seeing the zone and snail's pace style of play in person, however, proved to be too much to overcome in a 64-60 loss to the Eagles on Thursday night at the Payne Athletic Center.
"We lost track of the things we can control out there," MSU Texas Head Coach
Justin Leslie said. "We expected the zone. We just took too long to get into our offense."
Midwestern State trailed by seven with under two minutes remaining, but used an 8-2 run to fight to within one at 61-60 with :16 left after
D'monta Harris drilled his fifth three-pointer of the night. Harris finished with a team-high 19 points.
Oklahoma Christian sealed the game by converting 3-of-4 from the free throw line but not before grabbing two critical offensive rebounds.
"I thought we did a very nice job out of the timeout of forcing them into a tough shot," Leslie said. "They shot a long, contested two, and we just did not box out on the back side."
Aubrey Johnson hit nine three-pointers on the way to a game-high 35 points for the Eagles.
"Our entire scout was to go over the top of screens with him and stay connected and make him make two's," Leslie said. "When you let a shooter make his first shot, it just opens things up and we let him have his first three."
Johnson scored 15 points in the first half to stake the Eagles to a 33-27 advantage at the break.
Jalin Brown added 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting for the Mustangs.
MSU Texas leading scorer
Darius Thompson did not play after suffering an injury at the end of Wednesday's practice.
The Mustangs (3-14, 3-8) head to Fort Smith on Saturday for a showdown with the Lions. Oklahoma Christian improved to 6-10 (5-7).
Oklahoma Christian's Will Lienhard scored seven points, grabbed 15 rebounds, and blocked four shots.
