Aggies edge No. 12 Mustangs in regular season finale

THE RUNDOWN
LAWTON, Okla. – Cameron ended No. 12-ranked Midwestern State's eight-match winning streak with a 4-3 win over the Mustangs on Thursday at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.

MSU drops to 17-6 overall and 4-2 in Lone Star Conference play while the Aggies improve to 9-13 overall and 4-2 in league action.

After being on the winning side of four-straight 4-3 wins, MSU saw the other end of the spectrum as the Aggies walked off winners.

The Maroon and Gold suffered their first loss of the season when winning the doubles competition, falling to 13-1 when taking a 1-0 lead after a sweep of pairs play.

The 23rd-ranked tandem of Ashley Ramirez and Bianca Duff bested the Aggies 36th-ranked Alisa Savina and Rebeka Velasova, 6-2, at the No. 1 flight to open the match.

Junior Lea Cizeron and sophomore Taylor Gray saw their first action together with Gray picking up her first career doubles win as the duo swept Melany Opolz and Pilar Jaurena at the No. 3 flight, 6-0.

Senior Greta Lazzarotto and freshman Casie Curry completed the doubles sweep with a 7-5 win over Sarah Frendo and Sara Petric at the No. 2 line.

MSU split the first sets on all six singles courts before both sides exchanged wins to even the match at 3-3.

Duff fell in straight sets to fifth-ranked Frendo at the top line, 6-1, 6-1, to pull the Aggies even while Gray earned her second singles win of the year with a 6-2, 6-4 decision against Jaurena to put the Mustangs back on top, 2-1.

Velasova handed 59th-ranked Lazzarotto a 7-6, 6-1 loss at the No. 2 line before the Maroon and Gold again answered with a win to pull within a point of clinching. Curry rattled off her ninth-straight win to improve to 16-1 on the season, taking down Opolz, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5.

Needing a win on one of the final two courts, Ramirez was unable to maintain a first-set lead on Savina, falling 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, to push the action to the No. 3 line.

Cizeron forced a decisive third set in her match before eventually succumbing to Petric, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, to give Cameron the win.
