SILVER CITY, N.M. -- Hannah Reynolds didn't draw the start Saturday afternoon at Drag's Court.
That didn't keep her from delivering the inside muscle Midwestern State needed in leading the Mustangs to a 60-41 win over Western New Mexico.
"We changed up the lineup because we wanted to press early," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said. "Hannah came off the bench and scored 17 (points) for us. That shows just how big time of a player she is."
Reynolds connected on 8-of-13 shots and even hit her first 3-pointer of the season, while grabbing five rebounds. The 6-4 forward from Prosper did it by leaning on the Mustangs' guard play.
"There so many assisted shots," she said. "Our guards were able to get into the paint and find me under the basket. They made a lot of effort plays."
The lineup change also delivered an early punch for Midwestern State as the Mustangs put the clamps on WNMU by holding them to two points in the opening five minutes of the game extended the lead out 16-4 by the end of the period.
"They changed defenses on you a lot, so you really have to prepare for a team like this," Johnson said. "I am proud of the way the girls stayed on the same page the whole game."
Midwestern State (3-3) seized control of the game with a 7-0 run fueled by a transition layup by Reynolds, who followed with a 3-pointer to give MSU a 25-7 edge with just under eight minutes to play in the first half.
The Mustangs led by as many as 25 points in securing their largest conference road win since beating Eastern New Mexico 72-46 during the 2014-15 season.
Seniors
Mica Schneider and
Elizabeth Cathcart added 10 points each, while redshirt-freshman
Frances King had five points and five assists in her first collegiate start.
Kyanne Kowatch and Alicia Mardis netted 10 points to lead Western New Mexico. The Mustangs dropped to 3-4.
Midwestern State takes on Angelo State Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
