PORTALES, New Mexico - The Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds (3-12, 1-6) upended the Midwestern State Mustangs (3-11, 1-5), 3-2, in a five set thriller on Saturday afternoon inside Greyhound Arena.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after claiming the first set 19-25 and the second set 20-25.
Midwestern State began their comeback bid with a 25-15 win in the third set. After building an 11-10 lead, MSU erupted for seven straight points to take an eight point advantage.
Rachel Howes blasted four of her team high 13 kills during the run. Eastern New Mexico trimmed the deficit to 19-13 later in the set, but it was the closest the Greyhounds would come.
The Maroon and Gold evened the match at 2-2 with their second straight 25-15 win. A 12-1 run helped the Mustangs erase an early 8-7 deficit.
Janiya Chapman collected four kills in the set while Howes chipped in with three.
Eastern New Mexico won the decisive fifth 17-19 to earn their first Lone Star Conference win of the season.
Sarah Glawe posted a match high 26 assists in the losing effort.
