THE RUNDOWN
DENTON, Texas – Much like it began, Midwestern State's 2018 season ended on a golden goal in double overtime. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, they were on the wrong end of the decision in a 1-0 double overtime loss to Texas Woman's in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
It took over 320 minutes to determine a victor between the Mustangs and Pioneers. Both sides dueled to a 0-0 draw on Oct. 5 and a 3-3 tie on Sunday. Thursday proved to be much of the same, with Hannah Schneider providing the lone goal in the contest in the 101st minute.
Freshman keeper
Samantha Upton made a season-high 11 saves, including nine in the first half. Schneider's deep shot beat Upton in the upper left corner to send the Pioneers to a semifinal matchup with Angelo State in Canyon.
The Mustangs were unable to break through offensively and were held without a shot on goal for the second time this season.
Sophomores
Heather Vanderloo and
Kelly Cannistra provided MSU Texas' only offensive threat in the first half. Cannistra fired an attempt in the 31st minute before Vanderloo shot at the 41-minute mark. Both attempts were blocked by the TWU defense.
Freshman
Senna Garcia put the pressure on the Pioneers in the 70th minute. Her attempt went wide right.
In the first overtime, Upton made a diving catch to reject Lauren Neely's header off a free kick.
Just 11 seconds into the second overtime period, Trinity Kaufman passed the ball to Schneider who launched a deep attempt that beat Upton and claim the victory for TWU.
