Defense dominates for @MSUTXfc in 1-0 shutout of Newman

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA, Kansas – Junior Juan Ramirez matched the team-lead with his fifth goal of the season as seventh-ranked Midwestern State (12-1-1 overall; 8-1-1 HC) shutout Newman, 1-0, on the road Thursday evening at Wilkins Field.
 
The Mustangs played themselves into a position to win the North Division of the Heartland Conference with a win over Rogers State on Saturday at Soldier Field in Claremore, Okla.
 
MSU Texas improves to 15-0-1 in the last 16 road matches after the shutout of the Jets.
 
Sophomore keeper Taylor Lampe improved to 12-1-1 overall and 22-1-3 in his career with the Mustangs, including 13 shutouts. The Mansfield native made two saves while the back line of Kristian Martinez, Dylan Burke, Rory O'Keeffe and Koby Sapon-Amoah limited the Jets to just four shots in the victory.
 
Ramirez broke free in the 16th minute, going far post and hitting the upper-90 to provide all the offense in the match.
 
NU's Jean Claud Consol made one save between the pipes for the Jets.
 
MATCH NOTES
- Midwestern State set up a showdown with Rogers State on Sunday. With a win, the Mustangs clinch the North Division of the Heartland Conference
- MSU Texas remained unbeaten in the last 16 road and neutral site contests, going 15-0-1 during that stretch
- The Mustangs improve to 14-1-0 all-time against Newman and have held the Jets to one goal in the last seven meetings in Wichita
- Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Lampe moved past Kevin Gentry (1988-91) and Jeremy Turner (2003-07) for the sixth most shutouts in program history with his 13th clean sheet
- Junior Juan Ramirez matched the team lead with his fifth goal of the season
- Ramirez joins Rory O'Keeffe and Gui Leme in the five-goal club for the Mustangs
