LAWTON – The MSU Mustangs were unable to overcome a 31-point third quarter from Cameron, en-route to a 73-56 loss at Aggie Gym on Tuesday.
After allowing just 26 points and 26.8 percent shooting in the first half, the Mustangs allowed the Aggies to shoot 58.8 percent in the third quarter and 58.6 in the second half. Cameron opened up the third on a 19-6 run over the first seven minutes to take the lead for good.
The Maroon and Gold did no favors to themselves offensively after the intermission, shooting just 25.0 percent from the field in the second half while committing eight turnovers.
Junior guard
Chelcie Kizart led the Mustangs with 11 points while going 4-for-4 from the free throw line and grabbing three rebounds. Senior forward
Micheline Mercelita posted her second-straight game with nine rebounds and senior guard
Kristin Rydell had a season-high seven assists, the most by any MSU player this season.
Sophomore guard Jamie Bonnarens led all players with 26 points while grabbing eight rebounds in the win for the Aggies.
After the setback, the Mustangs fall to 9-6 overall and 6-3 in Lone Star Conference play.
NOTES
- The Mustangs allowed 31 points in the third quarter and 47 in the second half after taking a 33-26 lead into the locker room at halftime, both the most MSU has allowed this season.
- The loss snapped a two-game winning streak by Midwestern State, which fell to 0-3 in its last three road games.
- MSU shot a season-best 82.4 percent from the charity stripe, going 14-of-17.
- The Maroon and Gold shot 37.7 percent from the field and went 2-for-12 from beyond the arc. The two three pointers tied a season-low.
- The Mustangs shot 52.0 percent in the first half, compared to just 25.0 percent in the second half, including a 3-for-16 fourth quarter.
- MSU held the Cameron offense in check before the half, holding the Aggies to 26.8 percent shooting before the intermission, but gave up 58.6 percent of the attempts in the second half.
- The Mustangs failed to win the rebound battle for the sixth time in 14 games this season as the Aggies held a 49-31 edge on the glass.
- Cameron grabbed 23 offensive rebounds, resulting in 14 second chance points, compared to MSU which had nine offensive rebounds and failed to record a second chance bucket.
- The MSU bench provided much of the offense for the Mustangs, scoring 40 points.
- Junior guard
Chelcie Kizart led the Mustangs with 11 points while going 4-for-4 from the free throw line. It was the third time this season the St. Paul native scored in double-figures and second time in the last three contests.
- Senior forward
Micheline Mercelita grabbed nine rebounds, but failed to score for the second time this season, going 0-for-7 from the field.
- Senior guard
Kristin Rydell had a season-best seven assists, the most by any MSU player this season. Rydell tacked on four points and two rebounds.
