THE RUNDOWN
SAN ANGELO, Texas -- It was depth over starting star power Thursday night at Junell Center/Stephens Arena.
Midwestern State senior
Whitney Taylor fired in four 3-pointers to lead a group of four players in double figures with 18 points in a 73-64 win over Angelo State.
The Mustangs used their third straight win to improve to 6-2 on the season and move to a perfect 3-0 in Lone Star Conference play for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
MSU once again used all 14 on the roster extending the energy to hold Angelo State to a 30.9-percent shooting night.
The Mustangs seized control of the game with a 13-2 run covering the end of the first period and beginning of the second. Senior guard
Jasmine Richardson ignited the spurt with a 3-pointer at the end of the first frame before scoring the first seven points of the second.
After Angelo State's De'Anira Moore hit a pair of free throws, Taylor answered with her second triple of the run to give the Mustangs their largest lead of the first half at 34-22 with 6:46 remaining in the second period.
Moore, who finished with a game-high 21 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, led the charge for the Rambelles, who proved adept at hitting shots with contact as ASU produced seven tradition three-point play opportunities for the game.
Angelo State chipped the deficit back to four points after Madi Greenwood hit her only 3-ball of the night with 53 seconds to go, but MSU closed with a flourish as
Kristin Rydell buried a triple and Richardson beat the first half horn with a driving layup to push the advantage back to nine.
The Rambelles would get no closer than four the rest of the way as MSU would lead by as many 13 down the stretch after
Chelsea Adams canned a 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 69-56 lead with 2:16 to play.
Richardson and
Micheline Mercelita scored 11 points, while Rydell chipped in 10 to give the Mustangs four players in double figures.
Junior guard Marquita Daniels (14 points, 8 steals) and Greenwood (13 points) were also in double digits for Angelo State which fell to 4-2 and 2-1.
