DALLAS – Midwestern State battled to stay even for 90 minutes against perennial region power Colorado School of Mines in opening round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs Tuesday afternoon at DBU's Patriot Soccer Field.
Then in the opening minute of overtime, CSM's Haley Cole hit the post and Brooke Stoermer deposited the rebound for her ninth goal of the season to provide the winning 1-0 margin.
The Orediggers (16-3-1) move to face host and top seed Dallas Baptist in the South Central Region semifinal Saturday at 1 p.m.
Midwestern State, which carried a nationally ranking for two reporting periods this season reaching No. 11 in the United Soccer Coaches' Poll, end the season with its fifth-straight loss and an 11-8-1 record.
Colorado School of Mines controlled possession and run-of-play throughout the match generating 23 shots to just two for MSU. The Orediggers also produced all eight corner kick chances in the match.
Freshman
Kelly Cannistra put a shot on frame from inside the box in the 29th minute, while sophomore
Sarah Stewart attempted a shot from beyond 25 yards out in the 61st minute.

Courtney Burnette made eight saves in her final game for the Maroon & Gold.

- Seniors
Courtney Burnette and
Destinee Williamson played their final matches for MSU. Both are four-year, all-conference performers. Burnette leaves as MSU's all-time leader with 32 shutouts, while Williamson ranks fifth with 32 goals and 79 points.
- The Mustangs fell to 1-5-1 in NCAA Tournament matches.
- MSU appeared in postseason play in back-to-back seasons for just the second time in program history. The Mustangs advanced in 2010 and 2011 and now in 2016 and 2017. It's their fifth overall postseason showing.
- The Mustangs were shutout for the fifth time this season and did not score in the 106 minutes of the regular season since Williamson scored in the 65th minute against West Texas A&M on Oct. 29th.
- MSU managed a season low two shots against Colorado School of Mines. It was the fewest since the Mustangs mustered two shots at St. Edward's in 2014.
- Midwestern managed five total shots in 181 minutes this season against the Orediggers.
- MSU's season ending five-match skid is the longest in program history.

Midwestern State is slated to return 22 letter winners in 2018 including 10 student-athletes which made at least 10 starts this season.
