Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Trey Reed / MSU Athletic Communications

No. 3 @MSUMustangsFC claims Heartland postseason title, beats St. Ed's 1-0

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS Scott Doney was up to his old tricks in Sunday afternoon's Heartland Conference Championship at Stang Park.

That suited the third-ranked Mustangs just fine as the senior from New Zealand headed in the lone goal in a 1-0 win over No. 14 St. Edward's to seal MSU's first conference tournament title since 2006.

"It was a tough game against these guys. It always is," Doney said. I was proud of the boys. They fought and really gave it their all today. I am really happy with the way we played."

The Mustangs took advantage of a foul just outside of the box in the 57th minute. Freshman Carlos Flores looped in a ball to the far post and Doney leaped just high enough to beat St. Edward's defender Owain Hoskins to the ball to head it just inside the post.

"I just managed to get a touch on the cross," Doney said. "I was happy it went in for my team."

St. Edward's controlled the slightest edge in shots (11-9), but it was MSU that produced the most dangerous chances working for seven corner kicks in the first half.

"We have a fairly large team, so we need to be clinical when we get our chances," Doney said.

Redshirt freshman Taylor Lampe made a pair of saves to notch his sixth clean sheet of the season in 10 starts.

Senior midfielder Pierre Bocquet earned tournament MVP honors and was joined on the all-tournament team by Lampe, Koby Sapon-Amoah and Patrick Fitzgerald.

With their seventh straight victory, the Mustangs extended the second longest unbeaten streak in program history to 20 matches while moving to 18-0-2.

The NCAA Division II Men's Soccer postseason field will be revealed via video stream on NCAA.com Monday night at 6:30.

NOTES
- Senior forward Scott Doney has scored goals in two of last three matches to up his campaign total to 13. He has accounted for goal in 10 matches this season.
- Freshman midfielder Carlos Flores recorded his team-best eighth assist.
- Redshirt-freshman Taylor Lampe recorded his sixth shutout in 10 starts this season but first since beating Newman (Kan.) 2-0 on Oct. 26. He let in goals in his last two outings versus Oklahoma Christian and Texas A&M International after permitting a single goal in his first seven appearances this season.
- Midwestern State avenged a 2-0 loss to St. Edward's in last season's Heartland Conference final at Stang Park.
- It was MSU's fourth overall conference postseason tournament title to go along with two from the Lone Star Conference (1999 and 2001) and another from the Southwest Soccer Conference (2006). The Mustangs did not compete in a postseason conference tournament from 2007-15.
- MSU's current 20-match unbeaten streak is the second longest in program history falling in behind the 26-match run from 2001-02. It is the longest single season streak.
- Midwestern State has won five of the last six against St. Edward's since the start of the 2015 season and are 17-3-2 all-time against the Hilltoppers in Wichita Falls.
