Doney delivers second half equalizer; No. 3 @MSUMustangsFC battle to 1-1 draw at Rogers State

THE RUNDOWN
CLAREMORE, Okla. – No. 3 Midwestern State battled Rogers State to a 1-1 draw in a physical contest Thursday evening at Soldier Field as the two teams needed overtime to decide the result for a second time this season.

Midwestern State (11-0-2, 7-0-2) collected its second draw in the last three matches and trailed for the first time this season Thursday as Riggie Gonzalez lifted Rogers State (6-5-2, 3-4-2) to a 1-0 advantage in the 15th minute with a header goal near the back post off a ball from Kevin Kwarteng.

The Mustangs netted the equalizer in the 65th minute with senior forward Scott Doney recording his team-best 10th score of the season with a header goal off a free kick from freshman midfielder Carlos Flores.

After placing four shots on goal in the opening half, the Mustangs were unable to put one on target in the second period. MSU earned its best scoring opportunity of the second half with five seconds to play as Doney's header hit the crossbar following a corner kick from Flores.

Midwestern outshot the Hillcats 7-4 in overtime, but Rogers State's Walker Farrar collected four of his eight saves on the night in the extra periods to deny MSU its second golden goal against the Hillcats this season.

Redshirt freshman Taylor Lampe also came up with several huge stops on the evening with three saves in the second half and two in the second overtime to finish with six for the match.

After 10 yellow cards had been issued between the two teams, the Hillcats played a man down for the final 3:08 as Gonzalez picked up a red card at the 106:52 mark.
