Ibaka, Smith lead Mustangs to comeback win over ENMU in overtime, 108-104

THE RUNDOWN

PORTALES, N.M. – Igor Ibaka and Pat Smith each recorded a career-high 28 points with Ibaka pulling down a career-best 20 rebounds to help Midwestern State erase three double-digit deficits and earn its sixth-straight win in a 108-104 overtime victory over Easter New Mexico Saturday evening at Greyhound Arena.
 
Eastern New Mexico (7-10, 1-6 LSC) opened up a 12-point cushion at 65-53 with 12:09 remaining following a layup by Andre Hughes before Midwestern State (12-4, 5-3 LSC) mounted a comeback with three different Mustangs contributing offensively. Smith totaled five points during a 12-2 run, bringing the Mustangs within a pair at 67-65 with 8:22 to play in regulation. The Greyhounds stretched their advantage to six with just under five to play before Ibaka and Smith led the Mustangs on a 7-0 spurt capped off by a Smith triple to give MSU a 78-77 lead with three minutes left on the clock. A three-pointer for Javaan Mumtaz put ENMU ahead by four with 1:39 to play but Smith and Ibaka both sank a pair of free throws at the line to send the game into overtime.
 
Ibaka scored nine of MSU's first 13 points in the extra period, helping the Mustangs lead the entire way. The Mustangs reached the century mark following a three-point play from Smith before a basket by Magnus Richards gave the Mustangs their largest lead of the night at 103-94 in the final minute. After MSU missed a pair of free throws, a triple for Marquise Harris brought the Greyhounds within three with 10 seconds to play but the Mustangs went 3-of-4 from the free-throw line in the final seconds to secure the victory.
 
The Greyhounds went 7-of-14 from behind the arc in the first period, building their largest lead of the night at 39-25 with 4:30 to play in the half. The Mustangs cut their deficit in half at the break, closing the period on a 13-6 run for a 45-38 halftime score.
 
ENMU went on to take as much as a 12-point advantage early in the second half at 52-40 following a three-pointer from Joe Clarke with 18:11 remaining. However, the Mustangs responded with a 10-0 run in a span of 1:21 following five points from Richards to come within a basket.

Igor Ibaka and Pat Smith each posted a career-high 28 points to lead the Mustangs in scoring with Ibaka recording his eighth double-double of the season and sixth in the last seven games with a career-best 20 boards
- Ibaka went a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line while Smith finished 12-of-13 from the line
- Magnus Richards tied a career-high 18 points while adding seven rebounds to his stat line
- Brandon Neel finished with 16 points while posting a career-best six assists and five steals to lead MSU
- Midwestern State went 39-of-52 (75%) from the free-throw line, the program's most made free throws in a game since going 40-of-50 (80%) in an 83-75 win over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Jan. 30, 1993
- The Mustangs shot 43.7 percent for the night while going 38.9 percent from three-point range
- MSU scored 100 or more points against the Greyhounds for the third-straight game, defeating ENMU 112-68 in the LSC quarterfinals in Allen last season and 110-62 in a win in Portales last February
- Eastern New Mexico became just the second team to shoot over 50 percent against the Mustangs this season, firing at a 50.7 percent clip
- The Greyhounds finished with an MSU opponent high of 15 three-pointers, going 15-of-32 (46.9%) from long range
- ENMU struggled from the charity stripe, shooting just 13-of-26 (50%)
- Marquise Harris led Eastern with 26 points on 7-of-12 from three-point range
- MSU held a 29-13 advantage in second chance points while the Greyhounds led 27-10 in fastbreak points
