Gritty Mustangs come up short to Angelo State on Senior Night

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State women's basketball team battled hard against one of the Lone Star Conference's top teams, erasing a pair of double-digit deficits, before dropping an 83-77 contest to Angelo State on Senior Night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Midwestern State (5-20, 4-11 LSC) put up its best offensive totals of the season with 77 points on a 46.3 shooting percentage with sophomore guard Kristin Rydell coming off the bench to lead the Mustangs with a career-high 17 points on the night. Angelo State (18-6, 11-3 LSC) held a comfortable advantage for a majority of the opening period, pulling away from the Mustangs in the latter part of the quarter to take a 21-14 lead after 10 minutes of play.

A three-pointer by junior guard Taylor Dorsey gave the Rambelles their first double-figure lead of the game 10 seconds into the second quarter. However, the Mustangs fought back as a three-point play by Rydell sparked a 6-1 run for MSU to pull within two at 27-25 with 3:19 remaining.

ASU pushed its lead back up to six after a layup by junior post Jasmine Prophet with 2:25 to play before Westbrooks knocked down a jumper and Rydell a triple to bring the Mustangs to within a point. A layup by senior forward Rochelle Lauer gave the Mustangs their first lead since the 6:49 mark in the first quarter at 32-31 before a three-pointer by senior guard Brea Mitchell propelled the Rambelles to a 34-32 halftime advantage.

ASU stretched its lead to 11 early in the third quarter following a Mitchell three-pointer as the Rambelles built as much as a 12-point advantage until a Westbrooks jumper made it a five-point contest at the end of the frame.

The Mustangs weren't through yet, trimming their deficit down to one at 60-59 following a three-pointer by sophomore guard Krishawn Crockett with 7:38 to play. After ASU built its lead back up to 12 in the final minutes, the Mustangs would be unable to pull closer than six down the stretch as the Rambelles walked away with the victory.

Dorsey finished with 37 points and 12 rebounds to lead ASU while Mitchell finished with 18 points and Prophet added 16.

Midwestern State will travel to Lawton, Okla., next Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff against Cameron in the regular season finale at Aggie Gym. The game will be streamed online on ESPN3.com.
