WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- It was a block party for No. 21-ranked Midwestern State Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
In the end, the Mustangs left with more than a few door prizes in surviving No. 16-ranked Angelo State's furious rally to win 76-71.
Combined with the Texas A&M-Kingsville's win at Cameron at Tarleton State's win over West Texas A&M, Midwestern clinched at least a share of its ninth Lone Star Conference championship and seventh in the last 10 years.
The Mustangs can clinch an outright title and the No. 1 seed with a win over Cameron next Saturday at Aggie Gym in Lawton. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
Clinching a share of the title was the only thing that could overshadow record shattering performances by
Trevor Fuller and the rest of the MSU defense.
The 6-8 forward from Dallas set conference and school records swatting 11 shots and the team set the same marks with 16 total blocks as
Khapri Alston,
Hershell Grant,
Pat Smith,
Magnus Richards and
DeVaughn Jones all contributed to the block party.
Fuller's 11 swats bettered the mark of 10 set by East Central's Ian Adams (vs. Texas A&M International, 2005) and West Texas A&M's Carlos Silva (vs. Southwestern Oklahoma, 2004) in the LSC annals, while upping former MSU standout Eric Dawson's total of eight set against Southeastern Oklahoma in December of 2006.
Midwestern State's 16 total blocks erased the former LSC mark set by Central Oklahoma against Arkansas Baptist in 1993 and advanced the school record past the 13 set by the Mustangs in Dawson's record setter against Southeastern Oklahoma in 2006.
The Mustangs needed every bit of it after pushing the lead to 21 when Alston converted a layup with 12:53 to go.
Behind Tre Bennett and Quay King, Angelo State screamed back by hitting nine 3-pointers in the second half to pull within two at 73-71 after King drilled his fifth triple of the game with 47 seconds remaining.
But
Bretson McNeal drove for a layup with 27 seconds remaining before King finally missed from long range allowing
Jordan Stevens to bury one of two free throws with 3.7 seconds remaining to secure the victory.
Midwestern claimed its fourth consecutive victory to improve to 20-5 on the season while moving to 9-4 in Lone Star Conference just a game ahead of Cameron, Angelo State, West Texas A&M and Tarleton State.
The Mustangs have reached the 20-win plateau in each of the last eight seasons.
Angelo State fell to 20-5 on the season and 8-5 in LSC play. The Rams had won their previous four matchups against MSU.
