THE RUNDOWN
COMMERCE, Texas – Midwestern State claimed its fifth Lone Star Conference Tournament title in program history Sunday afternoon, taking down top-seeded Texas A&M-Commerce 5-4 in penalty kicks to earn the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
After a 1-1 score through 110 minutes of action, teams lined up for a shootout to determine the conference champion. Junior goalkeeper
Courtney Burnette recorded the lone save of the shootout on the first attempt from Texas A&M-Commerce's Anitra Wright, rejecting the shot on the left side of the net.
Midwestern State (13-5-3) was successful on all attempts in the shootout with freshman
Sarah Stewart clinching the championship for the Mustangs with a shot to the right side of the goal for the 5-4 advantage.

Avery Lewis also converted penalty kicks to lift the Mustangs to the crown.
Texas A&M-Commerce (14-5-1) struck early in the contest with Wright notching her fourth goal of the season on a cross from Savannah Grasser to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage 3:32 into the game.
In the 21st minute, junior forward
Destinee Williamson netted her team-leading 10th goal of the year and fourth score in the LSC Tournament with a strike on a breakaway, sailing a shot over goalkeeper Caitlin Duty for the equalizer.
In the second half, the Mustangs held a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal while A&M-Commerce's Kasey Sorbers came close to putting the Lions back in front with her attempt hitting the crossbar in the 52nd minute.
Neither team was able to put a shot on target in the first overtime period while both squads placed one shot on goal in the final 10 minutes of play.
NCAA TOURNAMENT
After claiming the LSC Championship, Midwestern State joins Colorado Mines and Dallas Baptist as teams to earn automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament from the South Central Region. The automatic qualifiers will make up half of the tournament field for the region with three additional teams receiving at-large bids to the postseason.
The Mustangs will learn their first round opponent and where they will play during the NCAA Selection Show tomorrow at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
