Aggies run past Mustangs in Red River Rivalry matchup

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Cameron outscored Midwestern State 56-26 in the paint while shooting 50 percent from the floor to record a dominant 87-59 victory over the Mustangs in a Red River Rivalry matchup Saturday evening at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

A 29-6 edge in the second quarter opened up a sizeable advantage for Cameron (12-6, 6-3 LSC) as the Aggies shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) and held Midwestern State (4-14, 3-5 LSC) to just 12.5 percent shooting (2-of-16) in the period for a 46-17 lead at the break.

The Aggies continued to run away from the Mustangs in the second half, stretching their lead to as many as 44 points in the early minutes of the fourth quarter.

With tonight's win, Cameron snapped an eight-game losing skid to Midwestern while recording its first win inside Ligon Coliseum since Dec. 6, 2005.

MSU continued to fight down the stretch, shooting 61.5 percent for a 25-point fourth quarter while limiting the Aggies to just 10 points in the final frame. Junior guard Jacquar Westbrooks netted six of her team-high 11 points in the final period, reaching double figures for the sixth time this season.

The Mustangs trailed 10-1 midway through the opening period until junior forward Jennifer Sissel knocked down MSU's first basket to spark a 10-5 run to pull within four.

A layup by junior guard Brittany Hill began an 18-0 run for the Aggies to open the second quarter with junior guard Dayla Threatt capping off the run less than four minutes into the period to help Cameron pull away from the Mustangs.

Midwestern was held to 29.9 percent shooting (20-of-67) for the afternoon, the lowest for the Mustangs since shooting 23.4 percent in the LSC opener against Texas Woman's on Jan. 2.

Sophomore guard Whitney Taylor joined Westbrooks in double figures with her seventh-straight double-digit scoring performance with 10 points while matching a team-best four assists. Westbrooks led the Mustangs with three steals while senior forward Katie Brown pulled down a team-high seven boards.

Threatt led the Aggies with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting while junior guard Charron Montgomery added 16 points on 8-of-13 from the field.

Midwestern State returns to the dome Sunday afternoon with a 4 p.m. tipoff against Texas Woman's.
