WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Cameron shot 65 percent from the floor in the second half and held off a furious rally by No. 6 Midwestern State to drop the Mustangs 80-75 in Lone Star Conference play Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
With the win, the Aggies take over the LSC lead improving to 13-7 overall while moving to 6-2 in league play. The victory is Cameron's first at Ligon Coliseum since claiming a 79-69 win on Dec. 5, 2002 as CU won for just the fifth time in 34 tries under the dome.
Midwestern lost for the second straight time to fall to 16-3 and 5-2.
The Aggies lit up the MSU defense to the tune of a 54.7 percent shooting night behind a 23-point, 7-rebound effort by senior Deondre Ray.
Cameron bolted out to double-digit lead when Jamaal Brantley culminated an 11-2 run with a jumper to give the Aggies a 27-16 lead with 9:29 to play in the first half.
CU would lead by as many as 12 points before
Jordan Stevens and
Sheldon Hagigal connected for back-to-back 3-pointers to pull MSU back to within 39-36 with 22 seconds to play in the opening half.
Ray connected on a pair of free throws to end the half, but Midwestern kept momentum to start the second half.
MSU senior forward
Khapri Alston connected on a layup to start the half before fellow senior
Bretson McNeal connected on one of his five triples on the night to pull the game even at 41-41.
The Aggies answered with consecutive jumpers by Stacey Lambert and Cameron Lee to push the lead back to four before
Hershell Grant hit a 3-pointer and a driving to give the Mustangs their first -- and only -- lead of the second half at 46-45 with 16:21 to go.
Once again, it was Ray who fueled a 7-1 run for the Aggies with a 3-pointer and a driving layup put Cameron in control.
CU flexed the lead back out to 12 before the Mustangs closed with a 9-0 run in the closing minutes and were within a possession at 78-75 when Alston hit a layup with 12 seconds to play.
Cameron, which had missed the front end of consecutive one-and-ones, put the game out of reach when Delvonte Pierre banked in a free throw off of the glass and had the second shot skim the front of the rim and fall in with 10 seconds to play.
McNeal paced the Mustangs with 17 points, while Stevens chipped in 14 points and four assists and Alston notched his eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Grant (13 points, 8 rebounds) and Hagigal (10 points, 3 3-pointers) also delivered solid performances off of the bench.
Midwestern State hits the road to take on Tarleton State Wednesday night at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
Both teams have lost their last two LSC games as Tarleton fell to Texas A&M-Commerce, 67-65, Saturday night in Stephenville.
