Mustangs ink program's largest LSC win with 95-50 victory over Javelinas

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Senior guard Brandon Golden collected his first career double-double wearing the Maroon and Gold with 18 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to lead No. 4/2 Midwestern State to its largest Lone Star Conference win in program history Wednesday night in a 95-50 drubbing of Texas A&M-Kingsville at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The 45-point LSC victory surpassed the previous record of 41, set back on Feb. 9, 2000 in a 104-63 win at Eastern New Mexico.

Wednesday's win also matched Midwestern State's best 17-game start in school history (2009-10) as the Mustangs improved to 16-1 and 5-0 in LSC play. The Mustangs' current 13-game win streak ties for the seventh longest in program history and matches the longest of the Nelson Haggerty era, winning his first 13 games after taking over the helm of the program in 2011.

The Mustangs shot 50 percent (36-of-72) from the field and knocked down 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from behind the arc, connecting on 10-plus three-pointers for the seventh time this season in their 17th-straight win over Texas A&M-Kingsville (9-7, 1-4 LSC).

Golden was joined in double figures by senior guards Bretson McNeal (16) and Jordan Stevens (16) and senior post Khapri Alston (10) with Alston narrowly missing his seventh double-double of the season with nine boards.

MSU came out of the gate on a 15-2 run in the first 7:42 of the contest following a three-pointer from Golden. The Mustangs held Texas A&M-Kingsville to just one field goal in the first nine-plus minutes of action before a layup by sophomore forward Elliot Taylor ended the TAMUK drought for a 22-6 game with 10:35 remaining in the half.

The Mustangs continued to pour it on offensively throughout the first period, shooting 56.3 percent (18-of-32) from the field. MSU stretched its lead to as many as 28 points in the opening frame after a Stevens three put the Mustangs ahead 34-6 with 5:56 to play in the half.

MSU strung together a 14-5 run through the first four minutes of the second half to up the advantage to 36. A free throw by junior guard Sheldon Hagigal gave the Mustangs their first 40-point lead of the contest at 64-24 with just over five minutes into the half.

The Javelinas were unable to pull any closer the rest of the way as a three-pointer from sophomore forward Nick Powell gave MSU its largest lead of the game at 47 points (95-48) with 1:14 to play.

The Mustangs finished with a season-high 57 rebounds, out-rebounding the Javelinas by 26 for their largest margin on the glass this season. MSU also totaled a season-best 26 assists with Stevens leading the way with seven. Junior forward Trevor Fuller recorded three blocks, his 10th three-plus block outing of the season, to help the Mustangs match a season-best 12 on the night.

Senior guard Jamar Goodwin led TAMUK with 13 points while senior forward Troy Jones added 10 points and a team-best eight boards for the Javelinas, who were held to 27.6 percent shooting (16-of-58).

Midwestern State returns to action Saturday at 4 p.m. against No. 11 Angelo State at the Junell Center in San Angelo.
