WICHITA FALLS, Texas — No. 23-ranked Midwestern State poured on the offense in a 63-46 trouncing of Tarleton State Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
The Mustangs delivered their third most total offense yards with 714 which was the most ever allowed by a Tarleton State team.
MSU, who improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2011, takes on No. 6 Angelo State next Saturday at LeGrand Stadium at First Community Credit Union Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
MSU sophomore quarterback
Hagen Hutchinson accounted for each of the Mustangs' first six touchdowns passing for a career high 252 yards and three TDs while rushing six times for 69 yards and three more scores.
Hutchinson scored on runs of 4 and 2 yards then hit
Derek Lockhart on a 6-yard slant and connected with
Ryan Hyman on a 35-yard seam route as the Mustangs built a 28-7 halftime advantage.
Hyman finished with a career-best seven catches for 105 yards and a touchdown while senior
Arsenio Phillips had three catches for 79 yards including a 56-yard score to start the fourth quarter.
Tarleton State clawed back to within 11 points at the start of the second half after Blake Barnes connected on a 44-yard field goal following a long kick return by Daniel McCants then the Texans scored on a blocked punt as Kason Fornes fell on the ball in the end zone to put the MSU advantage to 28-17 just 2 1/2 minutes into the second half.
But MSU quickly answered with a 30-yard strike from Hutchinson to
Tyrique Edwards and scored less than a minute later on a 2-yard TD run by Hutchinson to regain control at 42-17.
Freshman
Vincent Johnson added 1-yard score later in the quarter put the Mustangs up 49-17.
Redshirt freshman Reggie Gipson paced the MSU rushing attack with 81 yards on eight carries as five different rushers accounted for at least 50 yards including Hutchinson (6-69), Johnson (4-66),
Dante Taylor (11-59) and
Orlando Haymon (11-54).
Midwestern's 714 yards were only bettered twice in program history as the Mustangs rolled up 740 yards against Abilene Christian on Oct. 22, 2011 and had 737 yards against Southeastern Oklahoma State on Oct. 20, 2001.
The teams combined 1,217 yards which is the fourth most in MSU program history and the most since MSU and Abilene Christian had 1,287 yards in 2011 which stands as the school record.
The Mustangs used a balanced attack going for 358 yards in the air and 356 on the ground.
Senior linebacker
Calvin Stewart led the defense with nine tackles while Herb Whitehorse,
Tyler Massey and
Eric Olson all had sacks for the Mustangs.
Tarleton State dropped to 0-3 for the first time since 2011.
