LUBBOCK, Texas –
Career highs from junior guard Jacquar Westbrooks and sophomore guard Whitney Taylor were not enough for Midwestern State to overcome an early 20-point deficit as the Mustangs fell to 14th-ranked Lubbock Christian 92-71 Thursday evening at the Rip Griffin Center.

Westbrooks recorded a career night with 18 points while Taylor notched a career-best 17 points, leading Midwestern State (1-7) to a season-high 71 points. Redshirt freshman guard Anni Scholl also contributed on the offensive end with a career-high 10 points. Taylor and Scholl each shot 3-of-4 from behind the arc to help the Mustangs finish 8-of-12 from long range.

Lubbock Christian (7-0) shot 52.5 percent (32-of-61) from the field while the Mustangs connected on 42.6 percent (26-of-61) of their shots. Turnovers continued to doom the Mustangs as LCU totaled 26 points off 19 MSU turnovers. The Lady Chaps also held an 18-4 advantage in fast break points.

After a Westbrooks three-pointer made it a 5-3 contest in favor of LCU, the Lady Chaps closed out the first quarter on a 23-5 run to take a 20-point lead after 10 minutes.

LCU extended its lead to 31 at 51-20 with just under three minutes to play in the second quarter after a bucket by freshman forward Bobbi Chitsey.

Midwestern State (1-7) answered their largest deficit of the night with a 10-2 run to close out the half behind six points from Taylor for a 53-30 LCU lead at the break.

The Mustangs offense showed some life in the second half, trimming the Lady Chaps lead down to 14 at 74-60 with 7:37 to play in the fourth.

In the early minutes of the third quarter, junior post Jennifer Sissel helped spark a 9-4 MSU run to open the half. A trey from Scholl followed by baskets from Westbrooks and sophomore guard Kristin Rydell brought the Mustangs within 16 at 57-41 with 7:55 to play in the third.

After the Lady Chaps stretched their lead back up to 22, Taylor converted two three-point plays to help the Mustangs mount another run. However, the early lead by the Lady Chaps was too much to overcome for Midwestern with LCU earning a 92-71 win.

Hoppel led four Lady Chaps in double figures with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

Midwestern State next travels to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic, Dec. 18-19, at South Point Arena. The Mustangs will face Western Washington in the first game of the tournament before taking on Stonehill College (Mass.).
