SAN ANGELO, Texas – Midwestern State's run at a fifth Lone Star Conference Tournament title was cut short Thursday evening as the Mustangs suffered a 1-0 defeat to No. 4 seed West Texas A&M in a LSC quarterfinal match at ASU Soccer Field.

West Texas A&M (9-9-1) netted the eventual game winner in the final minutes of the first period.  From 45 yards out, junior midfielder Karyn Forbes sent a rocket over the outstretched hands of sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Burnette to put the Lady Buffs on the scoreboard in the 41st minute.

Midwestern State (8-7-3) finished with a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal while WT outshot the Mustangs, 14-11.

"We played very well," said head coach Damian Clarke. "Obviously, we didn't create as many scoring opportunities as we have before. I thought the effort was tremendous. At the end of the day, we're a good team and we battled hard."

After placing just two shots on target in the first 45 minutes, the Mustangs offense came out firing in the opening minutes of the second period. MSU totaled three shot attempts in the first three and a half minutes with LSC Freshman of the Year Imani Morlock placing one on goal, only to have it collected by freshman goalkeeper Courtney Dippel.

In the final minutes, the Mustangs reeled off three shots in the final two minutes, placing two on goal and having their final shot attempt from sophomore forward Destinee Williamson sent just right of the post at the final buzzer.

Junior forward Aly Wade led the Mustangs with two shots on goal while Forbes recorded three shots on target for WT.

Dippel (6-7-1) earned the win for the Lady Buffs with six saves while Burnette (8-7-3) took the loss with the one goal against and four saves to her name.

"I think in general, the team grew a lot," Clarke said. "When we look at it, we took 100 more shots than our opposition took on us this season. Last year, we averaged 10-12 shots a game and this year we were taking 16 shots. We're moving in the right direction and I'm proud of the growth that we've had."
