Colorado State-Pueblo hands Mustangs first loss, 87-74

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Bronson Moton's desperation heave from 30 feet as the shot clock expired gave Colorado State-Pueblo the nudge it needed to send No. 11-ranked Midwestern State to its first loss -- 87-74 -- Tuesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The 3-pointer gave the Thunderwolves a seven-point advantage which proved to be too much for MSU to overcome as the Mustangs slipped to 3-1 on the season.

Midwestern hits the road to take part of the Bill Joergens Invitational this weekend in Evansville, Indiana. The Mustangs take on No. 3 Bellarmine (Ky.) Friday night at 5:15 p.m. before closing classic play against Southern Indiana Saturday at 7:30.

MSU clawed its way back from a 9-point halftime deficit to take a 52-51 when Sheldon Hagigal's layup completed a 13-0 run with 13:14 to go.

Colorado State-Pueblo had answer at every turn as Nelson Kahler hit a pair of free throws as the Thunderwolves regained the lead.

The Mustangs tied it again after Jordan Stevens hit three free throws to tie the game at 55-55 just minutes later, but CSU-P 's Josh Smith hit a 3-pointer to repel the Mustangs.

The Thunderwolves appeared to put the game away when McDonald converted a traditional three-point play and Moton followed when his shot after the shot clock buzzer sounded for a 76-69 lead.

Midwestern pulled back to within three after McNeal hit Jones for a dunk in the lane then connected with Khapri Alston for a bucket in transition pull the Mustangs within 76-73 with 3:36 to go.

But Smith hit his third triple of the game to push the lead back out to six as the Thunderwolves stretch the lead out to 13 at the horn.
