SAN ANTONIO – Back-to-back second half goals off corner kicks from junior forward
Aly Wade helped the Midwestern State women's soccer team rally for a 2-1 road win over St. Mary's on a windy Sunday afternoon at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
"We were struggling from the loss at Angelo (State) and having the heart and mentality to find those two goals says a lot about the group. It was that recovery we needed to have," said head coach
Damian Clarke. "The seniors came through with Morgan (Hannon) and Callie (Briseno) getting those goals. That's what you want out of your seniors. We had to play well to make it happen."
After St. Mary's (10-4-0) netted an early second half goal from senior midfielder Lauren Peck that deflected off the hands of MSU sophomore goalkeeper
Courtney Burnette, the Mustangs offense began to come alive as they attempted to record the equalizer.
Midwestern State (8-4-3) placed two shots on goal before a shot from Wade hit the crossbar midway through the second period.
In the 68th minute, the Mustangs lit up the scoreboard as a Wade corner kick found senior midfielder
Morgan Hannon, who then volleyed a shot into the net for her fourth goal of the season.
The Mustangs continued to send shots towards STMU senior goalkeeper Caitlin McCarrell before recording the game winner in the 77th minute. Midwestern State earned their third corner kick of the half with Wade delivering a perfect ball to senior defender
Callie Briseno, who headed the ball into the top of the net for her first score of the season.
"The service was fantastic. Our last three goals have been from corner kicks," Clarke said. "We're figuring out where that ball's going to drop. It's encouraging."
The Mustangs defense was superb in the second half, holding the Rattlers to just three shot attempts and one in the final 13 minutes following the Mustangs' second goal.
Burnette (8-4-3) earned the win for the Mustangs, allowing the one goal while collecting five saves on the afternoon. Hannon and junior forward
Nicole Coetzer paced the Maroon and Gold with three shots apiece with Hannon finishing with a team-best two shots on goal. Midwestern held a 17-10 advantage in shots, 11-3 in the second half, with a 9-6 edge in shots on target.
Peck led the Rattlers with five shots and three shots on goal. McCarrell (2-1-0) was saddled with the loss, totaling five saves in 45 minutes of action.
Midwestern State concludes the regular season next weekend at home with contests against Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman's. The Mustangs will take on A&M-Commerce on Friday at 8 p.m. before honoring their seven seniors Sunday against TWU at 1 p.m.
