McNeal, Mustangs rally past Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Senior guard Bretson McNeal drilled two 3-pointers and finished off a layup in transition as Midwestern State stormed back for a 75-71 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville.

"These are the tough games you have to win in our league," MSU coach Nelson Haggerty said. "Hats off to Texas A&M-Kingsville, they played an incredible game tonight. Those guys were very emotional after the game. It is hard to lose these type of games especially at home. They made more winning plays than we did until the final five minutes of the game."

The Javelinas used a strong effort off of the bench keyed by Duan Wright (19 points, eight rebounds), D.J. Weathers (18 points) and Adonis Bailey (12 points) as TAMUK's starters managed just 14 points.

"They are very deep and play a lot of players, but the bench is where their production comes from," Haggerty said.

Wright gave Texas A&M-Kingsville a 67-62 lead after knocking down a pair of free throws with 3:16 to play, but that's when McNeal and Midwestern State got to work.

MSU answered with a three-point play by Khapri Alston before Wright answered with two more charity tosses to put Texas A&M-Kingsville back up by four at 69-65 with 2:54 to go.

McNeal then chased down his own miss after a steal by Xavier Blackburn before connecting on a 3-pointer from the right corner to give the Mustangs a 79-69 lead with 1:17 to play.

After MSU produced a stop on defense, Blackburn misfired on consecutive free throws but Trevor Fuller scrambled to save the rebound in for the Mustangs while allowed McNeal to step back and bury his fifth triple of the night to give Midwestern a 73-69 edge with 34 seconds to go.

Texas A&M-Kingsville got two more free throws from Wright before McNeal put the game away by hitting a pair of charity tosses with 14 seconds to play.

McNeal completed an all-around line with 24 points, six rebounds and five assists while Alston added 14 points and four rebounds.

Midwestern State (16-4, 5-1) takes on Cameron Saturday afternoon at Aggie Gym in Lawton. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.

Texas A&M-Kingsville drops to 6-12 and 1-5.
